Grading Policy

St. Gregory School believes that each child must actively engage in their schooling. Parents and teachers may guide and direct the learning process, but real achievement comes from each students coming to school prepared to fully participate in the learning process.

Grading Scale and Interpretation of Marks .The following grading system is used by the Archdiocese of San Francisco and St. Gregory School for grades 3-8.

A 96-100 A- 93-95
B+ 91-92 B 87-90
B- 86-84 C+ 81-83
C 74-80 C- 70-73
D+ 67-69 D 63-66
D- 60-62 F 59 and below

Grades 1 and 2: O = Outstanding, S = Successful, N = Needs Growth in this Area

Kindergarten: S = Successful, N = Needs Growth in this Area

Conduct and Effort are graded on a scale of 1-4.

1 =Outstanding, 2 = Meets Expectations,
3 = Needs Improvement, 4 = Unacceptable

Interpretation of Marks:

A student merits the grade “A" when:

1. The quality of the student’s work is excellent
2. A student consistently does more than is required 3. He/she follows directions and completes all assignments
4. He/she takes an active part in discussions
5. All work is handed in promptly, neatly and thoroughly completed
6. He/she shows enthusiasm for, and interest in, schoolwork

A student merits the grade of “B” when:

1. The quality of the student’s work is very good
2. A student frequently does more than is required
3. A student carefully follows directions and completes all assignments
4. Work is prompt, neat, thorough, and usually accurate

A student merits the grade of “C” when:

1. The quality of the work is average
2. A student does what is required
3. A student carefully follows directions and completes all assignments
4. Work is reasonably thorough and prompt
5. A student has average neatness and accuracy in all work

A student merits the grade “D” when:

1. Quality of the work is poor
2. A student does not do what is required
3. He/she is inattentive in following directions and completing assignments
4. He/she is often unprepared for class work and assignments
5. He/she is careless in preparation and presentation assignments

A student merits the grade of “F” when:

1. A student fails to do the required work
2. A student is inattentive in class
3. A student is lacking in required skills
4. He/she presents incomplete assignments frequently

Grades 1 and 2:

A student merits the grade of “O” when:

1. The quality of the student's work is excellent to very good
2. He/she follows directions and completes all assignments
3. A student’s work frequently goes beyond expectations
4. A student actively participates in class work

A student merits the grade of “S” when:

  1. The quality of the student’s work successfully meets grade-level expectations
  2. He/she is attentive and follows directions and completes assignments
  3. A student has neatness and accuracy in their work

A student merits the grade of “N” when:

  1. The quality of the student’s work does not consistently meet grade-level expectations
  2. The student is not consistently prepared for class
  3. Neatness and accuracy are inconsistent

Kindergarten:

A student merits the grade of “S” when:

1. The student’s work meets expectations

A student merits the grade of “N” when:

1. The student‘s work does not yet consistently meet expectations
